About Us
First Baptist Church of Codell is in a small rural community of less than 100 people located in northwest Kansas. We were established well over 100 years ago and still strive to be the Lord's local house of worship and fellowship serving Codell and the surrounding community. The town of Codell is unincorporated and has become more of a bedroom community to the surrounding cities of Plainville which is about 9 miles east with approximately 2,000 people, and Hays which is about 30 miles southwest with approximately 22,000 people. Children attend school districts at Plainville 9 miles west or Natoma 9 miles east. Fort Hays State University is also located in near by Hays. The church and the community have somewhat more of a diverse group of working people than it has in the past. While agriculture and oil production are still the staples to the local economy we have school teachers, carpenters, bank employees, factory supervisors, railroad employees, bus drivers, auto mechanics, health professionals as well as farmers, retires, and many other various professions that make up the work force in the church and community.
About 10 years ago many people thought the community and Church was all but destined to close the doors due to an aging and dying population. Since that time, there has been a real resurgence of a youthful population, which has made for a good mix of youth and wisdom. The church facility has undergone many improvements during this time as well as the town. Codell has a very nice community park and community center building, which have received major improvements recently. They are very accessible and utilized by the community. Codell has the small town charm of potlucks, hayrack rides, knowing every neighbor, a safe family environment, and most conveniences are only a short drive away.
